The use of clays medicinally dates back to prehistoric times & many indigenous peoples worldwide are still using clay widely. The use of clays as colour in cave painting is well known, however it is thought that the clays were used medicinally too (which came first I wonder; they found the clays they used as medicine caused colourful staining, or they discovered the clays they were using as paint had healing properties too?)
Red clay is chosen for wounds which will benefit from the high iron content. It can also be offered in water buckets and Caroline Ingraham (Institute of Applied Zoopharmacognosy) states it is popular with cows & elephants.
