The Greeks were the first to recognise fennel’s value as a gentle diuretic slimming aid, naming the herb ‘Marathron’ from ‘maraino’ to grow thin. The seeds were eaten by athletes whilst training for the Olympic games. The Romans ate them as part of an after-meal seed cake to aid digestion. Similarly, it was the favourite ‘weight watcher’s’ herb of the 16th Century, ‘much used in drink or broth…to make those lean who are fat’. Fennel was traditionally used to make a soothing eye wash, and was considered for centuries to improve eyesight and hearing.
Fennel is a constituent of the famous gripe water for babies & helpful for digestion issues including nausea.
It may also be selected by animals with digestive problems such as colic (it is an effective anti-spasmodic hence its inclusion in babies’ gripe water) as well as for its female hormone balancing effects.
It is also helpful in regulating lactation and can stimulate milk production or dry it up, depending on the need.
