Selected by dogs, cats & horses valerian in all its forms is a well-known calmer.
Indeed, valerian root is best known for its sedative & calming effect and has been used as a sleeping aid for the human animal for a long time.
It is useful for anxious behaviours, especially stress-related urinary problems in felines; seizures eg epilepsy and is a valuable muscle relaxant.
Many cats are as attracted to this as they are to catnip and really like to roll on valerian root and / or eat it. Some cats also like to be stroked with Valerian Aromatic Water.
Many horses will select valerian essential oil in a stressful situation – dentistry, vet visit etc.
It is one of the oils we offer to alpacas at shearing time, alongside violet leaf, frankincense, and spikenard.
